Friends of the Earth US was founded in 1969 in San Francisco, and was one of the founding organizations of Friends of the Earth International in 1970. Friends of the Earth US has for decades been at the forefront of high profile efforts to create a more healthy and just world.
In 2007:
- Leading the way in the United States on an issue that has been indefensibly ignored by the media and decision makers, Friends of the Earth U.S. was a chief organizer of a historic international summit held on April 16 in Washington, DC, exploring the disproportionate impact global warming will have on developing countries.
- In early March of 2007, Friends of the Earth U.S. won a court case filed with Greenpeace and four cities, charging that the Bush Administration's Export-Import Bank and Overseas Private Investment Corporation violated the law by providing more than $32 billion in financial assistance to oil and other fossil fuel projects without first evaluating the projects' global warming impacts to the United States. Setting a major precedent, a U.S. Court of Appeals recognized the importance of global warming and found that the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) applies to major federal government projects that contribute to climate change.
- As the new U.S. Congress developed a plan for its first 100 hours of legislation in 2007, Friends of the Earth U.S. worked with House leadership to draft and pass a historic rollback of billions in taxpayer giveaways to the oil and gas industry, channeling the savings to renewable energy programs.
